Knob & Tube Replacement

The knob and tube wiring was the standard of power installation in 1800s and 1900s and was superior to the current wiring practices. However, over the years, heat, time and rodent may cause the insulation on the wiring to disintegrate causing safety concerns.

The houses built before 1930s used porcelain knobs to run the wires through spaces that are unobstructed. The wires that run through the studs and joists are protected by porcelain tubes. The knobs suspend the cable in open for heat dissipation.

However, the system had major weaknesses. They included;

  • The lack of a ground conductor which places the occupants at the risk of electrocution
  • The switches are placed on the neutral terminal. This means that the current remains even after switching off the circuit.

Why is the replacement needed?

One of the consistent problems is the improper alterations. This can pose safety hazards to homeowners and even damage electrical appliances. Moreover, if additional branches are added to the system, there is a likelihood of blowing up fuses.

Materials that are used for insulation often attract rodents and leave the wires un-insulated, The heat above the ceiling lights also degrades the wire insulation. Most people add thermal insulation on the walls and attics to cut on the heating costs. However, insulation on the top of the knob is a major fire hazard.
